Inktober 52 - 2021 24

This wasn't an easy prompt either, because the images that come to mind when I read "X-Ray" aren't exactly wholesome, but with some deliberation I think I came up with a decent concept. I did sleep two days on it though.

The concept was a half and half sort of x-ray image of a person (To me, that is probably going to be a well-dressed girl, because that comes easiest to me). I am probably going to have to use references for this, because I can't really picture a rib-cage from memory.

Before I penciled in the details I decided I didn't really want this to be a straight half and half division, which turned out to be a momentary problem, because I wanted to include a good amount of rib-cage, about half of the skull, and at least enough of the face, so the observer could intuitively complete it. That would have been possible with segments that are angled a little severely, which is not the vibe I was going for, so I ended up making three segments out of it. It also saves me a lot of background work, I suppose.

I may or may not have massive troubles with the rib-cage. I do think it's going to look pretty cool, when I've added shading, but a lot of it was compromising between my own preferred aesthetic, and anatomically correct bones. It's still not as straight as I had envisioned it being, but for an early attempt, I guess that's fine. On the other hand, I don't see myself getting a lot of opportunities to draw skeletons, unless something very odd happens in the near future.

I'm really happy with the way this one turned out. This concept worked really well with my style, and it came out pretty crisp for the most part. I did wonder, whether I needed to put something in the upper left corner, before I noticed I hadn't put the text I add to each of these anywhere. Looking back, I maybe could have put the lettering on one of the clavicles and that could have looked good, but now it's in the empty space. That works decently, though I may have taken the eraser to the lettering too early and smudged it a little bit. Could you tell I was excited to finish this one? Either way, I think one could easily make a few of these and have fun doing it, and I might do that, if I decide for myself that I need another piece to work on during the week.

I enjoyed writing that poem last time, so I'm thinking about incorporating that into these Inktober challenges, since I take breaks between line-art and shading anyways. Anyways, here goes.

Below the 10 nanometer mark,

a young photon travels with haste.

To illuminate the dark

is its chosen duty.

To help with this task, it's gathered its friends

some foil, some magnets and paste,

it passes through obstacles and thence,

unveils a hidden beauty.
