Language Track 2023

This has been something I've wanted to try out for a while, but my concept has never been that mature. It's still not, but I figured I'd better start anyway, and develop the concept as I go.

The idea is to use the languages I've learned and am (re)learning, and use them in a beginner-friendly way, while practicing. Most centrally, I need to practice writing kanji, hanzi and teeline, if I want to actually get better at it. However, I feel that this is not a lot of work for a week, so maybe I'll find something sensible to do, that will extend this model. For now though, I'll go by the way I approach each language step by step, to introduce the process:

I need to write Japanese and Chinese sentences. Those are the two languages, where I can recall the most vocabulary readily, so I probably don't need to focus on the vocabulary that much. This means I'll take a sentence from either of the two languages as a base for the week.

I'll decompose the kanji into radicals and write each a bunch of times. The hanzi characters I'd need the radicals for too, eventually, but this time I just practiced each word in order of perceived importance. Here, the word "next" I'll probably need most in everyday conversation, so it went first.

Latin is a bit of a different problem for me. My vocab isn't strong, but my grammar is worse, so I need to actually start working on the declensions and the temporal forms. I'll focus on those first.

Indonesian is a vocabulary problem, more specifically, coming up with the right words, even if I know them, so any vocabulary I notice I have to look up to translate the sentence, I'll explain using Indonesian.

Teeline just needs to be practiced. All the english sentences that pop up during practice, I should reduce and rewrite into teeline.

This second iteration I feel works a bunch better already. I'm not actually that great a fan of using pictures in these entries, but the important thing about this practice is that partially the handwriting portion, so I can't really get around that. Still, minimizing the amount of paper I need for it to one page is a good idea, I feel. That means splitting the exercises into those that need to be done on paper, and those that don't, the latter will accompany the picture. Teeline probably benefits most from this, since it can always fill out the extra space. The Latin exercise was supposed to focus on grammar, so I'll appropriate an old exercise that I always used to skip when I was in school, but actually seems very effective in hindsight.

Indonesian I'll have to be a little creative about. It's not actually a very difficult language in terms of grammar, I feel, and I've mentioned that I'm actually struggling mainly with vocabulary. That means that grammar exercises aren't going to help in the way I want. I guess some free writing is in order. I'll go with an approach that's not strictly speaking great, but will help identify words and ideas that I use commonly, but can't convey and do some internal translation. For the sake of transparency, I'll italicize the words that I had to look up.

When studying dead languages like Latin, you sometimes run into a funny problem: Words that don't have an equivalent. This week features "weekdays" an invention way newer than the calendar that the Romans used, so I had to settle for something only functionally equivalent. Instead if weekdays, I decided to use "diebus illis" and picture somebody pointing frantically at a calendar.

Setiap hari saya mendengar musik. Saya suka hampir semua musik, dan suka main musik. Di dulu, aku menyanyi di paduan suara, tapi sekarang aku hanya menyanyi sendirian sama main paino atau gitar.
